I have always loved learning and improving as a person, and since I started this small business journey I’ve had to change and adapt my personality and habits to fit with the girlboss lifestyle and mindset. There are some girlboss books that have helped me put things into perspective, from how to create powerful habits to learning how to communicate and portray myself as a business-woman-to-be.
If you are planning on starting this beautiful but really stressful small business journey, I really recommend you to grab a coffee and read every single one of these books. Some of them are easier to read than others but they all have incredibly important and valuable information that will help you shape yourself into a true girlboss. These are my favourite girlboss books to read.
OUR FAVOURITE GIRLBOSS BOOKS TO READ
1. You are a Badass
Jen Sincero’s “You are a badass” has to be the first of these girlboss books to read for sure. In a really fun but direct way, she pushes you to own the “badassery” in your life, whether you need it for your relationships, work or just life in general.
It’s a very refreshing how-to guide full of hilarious experiences, which makes it one of the easiest and quickest girlboss books to read. This book will really help you create the life you want and get started on making your dreams come true asap.
Sincero has already released the spin-off for this book, called You Are A Badass At Making Money which I haven’t read yet but it’s the next one on my girlboss books to read list.
I got this book in my first Unbox Your Growth box – which by the way you MUST subscribe to if you are planning on becoming a girlboss – and I finished it in 3 days. I used to struggle with books that go deep into the science of things, but this book is SO GOOD.
Do you remember when your high school teacher told you that you were bad at maths or English and you thought for the rest of your life that you just didn’t have the ability to develop those skills? That you were not a “science” or “history” person? Well, that is absolute bollocks. Dr Dweck will teach you how to get into a growth mindset and make learning – about everything – a passion.
If you were classified when you were 10 based on an exam and you are tired of having a label, this is one of the most important girlboss books to read.
3. Creative Confidence
This amazing book was written by the founders of world-famous design firm IDEO, David and Tom Kelly, known for designing Apple’s iconic computer mouse (amongst many other things). This book aims to push people to pick up a pen and unleash their creative potential – “creative type” or not.
Sometimes we assume that creativity is something you are born with but in reality, it’s a skill that can be developed and perfected with time. Through loads of stories and anecdotes from their work at IDEO, they identify the principles and strategies that will allow us to tap into our creative potential in our lives.
Creative Confidence is all about exposing the creative potential within all of us. It leaves behind conventional ideas like “only artists are creative” and “creativity isn’t for corporate settings”. This book first establishes why and how we all have creativity within and then explains what can happen when that creativity is harnessed and utilized. One of the best girlboss books to read.
4. Big Money Energy
Being a girlboss also means making money and building your own empire, if you want to. One of the best girlboss books to read if you want to achieve those things is Big Money Energy, by Ryan Serhant. You might know him from Million Dollar Listing NY, and he is the absolute best. His energy is endless and he is really funny, if you’ve sever seen MDL or his own show Sell it Like Serhant – I really recommend both – you’ll see how confident he is without being arrogant or coming across as self-centred.
He describes the big money energy as “the feeling you get when you encounter someone who is massively succeeding in life. They’re the ultimate picture of self-confidence. There’s no bravado, no bragging — they know they have BME and so does everyone else”.
In Big Money Energy, Serhant will show you how he unleashed his Big Money Energy to crush his goals and achieve huge success, earning his first million before he turned thirty. Whether you’re a self-made entrepreneur, a corporate executive or a barista, Serhant will teach you how to climb the ladder to success better and faster than anyone else. This is one of my favourite girlboss books written by a true girlboss himself.
5. Women Don’t Owe You Pretty
Women don’t owe you pretty was a journey to discovery and self-esteem for me. I read during a very hard moment in my life and now I recommend it to everyone. This book will show you how to be unapologetically you, will remind you that you don’t own anything to anyone and will teach you how to grab your chair at the big table.
It has everything; women, empowerment, sex positivity, knowing your worth, beauty standards, etc. It doesn’t necessarily talk about building an empire but in order to do so, you need to know yourself and be aware of your surroundings and how things are shaped in order to address them in your best interest. One of my favourite girlboss books to read.
6. The 5 AM Club
When you start creating something new or you have a big goal on the horizon, you’ll start realising soon enough that the day doesn’t have enough hours to do everything. With college, this and my life, I needed to find a way to be productive and get things done, and between this book and Atomic Habits – see below – I completely changed myself.
Robin Sharma shares his original insights and the battle-tested tools he has developed by working with the most successful people on the planet, who coincidentally always start their routine when everybody else is still sleeping.
This book and mindset is hard work and you’ll hate it at the beginning, but it’s genuinely one of the best girlboss books to read.
7. Atomic Habits
James Clear has literally changed my life. I used to struggle with sticking with things long-term, creating habits basically. This is an amazing how-to with endless resources, very simple and straightforward information and everything just makes so much sense.
I have now created a pretty much flawless daily routine that allows me to get everything done, creating new and positive habits and getting rid of negative habits. I now enjoy going to the gym and I don’t think it’s a pain in the ass, because it means that when I come back home I give myself some self-care time, and just like that two amazing habits were created.
The only not-so-positive thing about this book is that it takes a little bit longer than other girlboss books to read on the list because you need to process the information to move forward, but is that a negative thing?
8. I Am That Girl
For those who have felt a little bit lost in the crowd, trying to discover what is exactly is their “purpose” or “passion,” I am That Girl gives a down-to-earth take on how to take ownership of your own life.
Imposter syndrome, not feeling good enough and other things that fill our life not letting us see how amazing we are. These and many others are the things this book tackles, pusing young women to live fearlessly and leave the world a better place.
This is a very easy and wholehearted book that you will absolutely love!
9. The Total Money Makeover
With over 20.000 5 stars on Amazon, The Total Money Makeover is one of the most important girlboss books to read. Big Money Energy will teach you how to attract and make money, and Dave Ramsey will teach you how to not lose it and what to do with it.
It’s very hard to make good money and very easy to go broke, and that is why learning how to have a good relationship with it and how to invest it in your future self will be a game-changer. I recommend this book to every person on this planet, and you should also follow Dave on Instagram for amazing free content.
All of his books will be especially useful if you are trying to get rid of debt and don’t know where or how to start. He is so knowledgable and this book is so worth the investment!
10. In The Company of Women
This anthology of interviews with over 100 diverse women is full of amazing anecdotes from how they unleashed their creativity, overcame diversity, and found their place in the world as entrepreneurs and bosses.
It’s a very refreshing and inspirational book that features media titans and ceramicists, hoteliers and tattoo artists, comedians and architects. These very diverse women paint a beautiful picture of what happens when we pursue our passions and dreams.
I know it’s not the point, but this book looks stunning on a coffee table with some flowers:P One of the prettiest-looking girlboss books.
11. Why Didn’t Anybody Tell Me This Sh*t Before?
What an amazing girlboss book!!! This is that one book you really wish you had read earlier. It features 60 letters from female leaders of multimillion dollar companies, solopreneurs, and every kind of woman in between. These stories are both a lifeline and a how-to guide for women navigating our complex world.
This book talks about everything you can imagine and more. From how to be the only woman in a room, how to deal with loss and failure, making impossible decisions between your family and your career and a lot more.
With pages full of growth, amazing stories, success and very important lessons, it’s a very easy, fun and interesting book to read and I highly recommend it to every person who reads this post!
12. Girl On Fire
I read Girl Code a couple of years ago and I fell in love with Cara Alwill’s writing and with the book in general. She then published Girl on Fire and it became one of my favourite “business” books and one of the best girlboss books to read in my opinion.
Girl on Fire talks about the importance of women entrepreneurs banding together in sisterhood and realizing the importance of collaboration over competition.
This book is for every woman out there who has a vision that others might not understand. She empowers her readers to stop waiting for their big break and, instead, to publish their own books, start their own podcasts, host their own panels and design their own clothing lines; whatever their desires are.
There are plenty of amazing girlboss books out there, but these are my absolute favourites.
