Fall has arrived and it’s time to talk skin. The weather is getting cooler, the air is getting drier and radiators are starting to be turned on, which is a set up for skin disasters. To avoid breaking out, eczema, and dry and itchy skin, you’ll have to adapt your skincare routine to the new season.
Creating a new skincare routine for fall it’s not as bad as it sounds, I promise. A few changes here and there and you’ll have the perfect fall skincare routine. You know I am really loyal to my favourite brands – #1 Fan of The Ordinary – but I’ve tried to include other brands that you might not have heard of, but are really good.
1. Switch to a thicker moisturiser
Summer falls for lightweight and oil-free moisturisers, but it’s time to say goodbye when September ends. When the temperature drops it’s a good indicator that you need to grab a slightly heavier moisturizer with hydrating ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides – “essential and healthy fatty acids that occur naturally in the skin but need to be replenished during the colder months”, Dr Shari Marchbein.
Elastin and Collagen are mandatory in your skincare routine for fall as they will help your skin heal the damage caused by the sun. Use Aloe Vera to help your skin build and coat for the winter.
2. Use Lip Moisturiser and Eye contour
Our skin doesn’t like abrupt temperature changes, and we need to help it as much as we can. There are certain areas of our face that need extra moisture to avoid wrinkles and fine lines in the future. If Lip moisturiser and eye contour are not part of your skincare routine already, make sure you add them to your fall skincare routine at least.
3. Cut back on exfoliants and retinoids
When fall and winter arrive, it’s recommended to cut back on more robust ingredients like glycolic acid and retinoids, according to Elizabeth Tanzi, M, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and associate clinical professor, department of dermatology at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
She recommends using glycolic treatment pads and masks to help get rid of the discolouration brought on by the sun.
4. Don’t stop using sunscreen
I know I’ve said this 4 billion times, but here it comes again: use sunscreen all year round. If you are not doing it yet, please please please include it in your skincare routine for fall. A lot of people are not conscious of how the sun can damage their skin, and not only in summer. UV radiation accelerates and increases the chance of developing skin cancer, and something as simple as using sunscreen can prevent it!
5. Vitamin C is your new best friend
Vitamin C will combat SPF rays that your sunscreen doesn’t block. It will also help to even your skin and making it appear brighter, boosting the natural production of collagen, which strengthens skin and helps with elasticity and hydration.
6. Invest in a humidifier
I know that a humidifier being part of your fall skincare routine sounds weird, but believe me when I say that it is a good tip. Radiators create a really dry environment and humidifiers add moisture to the air. The more moisture in the air, the more moisture your skin will get from it.
7. Visit a professional dermatologist or beauty specialist
These are some dermatologically-tested tips that will boost your fall skincare routine, but they shouldn’t be your absolute source of information. Dermatologists and beauty specialists know what’s best for your skin and you should always ask them before changing anything on your skincare routine. You don’t want to end up with a really bad eczema or allergy because you didn’t ask if that product was suitable for your skin, do you?

Lots of great skincare tips! I thought the retinoids were getting to be a bit much for my skin, is it just me or can they be a bit harsh?
You’re right! Retinoids can be really harsh, especially on sensitive skin, it’s better to cut them back when winter comes… great substitutes are glycolic pads and hyaluronic acid. The most important thing is keeping your skin really hydrated.
thanks for sharing, I do suffer from dry skin and as soon as fall arrives, I`m always on the look out for new products to suit my skin.
Really appreciate your picks and tips.
Really great tips ! Moisturizers and lip balms are always my go to but will have to try that vitamin C
Sunscreen in winter is something I never do, even if I know I should use at least an SPF15, maybe higher. Thanks for reminding me!
Great tips! Definitely important to switch up you routine as the weather get colder. I might try to include more hydrating products in my routine
