The master bedroom is my favourite part of the house, both to decorate and to spend time in. Creating a cosy and comfortable environment will help reducing stress and calming down after a hard day at work.
As an interior designer in the making, I love creating rooms that tell a story. Being able to see your own personality and make you feel connected to your surroundings is what turns a house into a home. I’ve put together some really easy tips that will show you how to decorate a bedroom just like I would do it for a client.
1. Throw Pillows
Making a room feel cosy and “coocoony” is one of the most important things when starting to decorate your bedroom. A great way to add texture, cosiness and character to a bedroom is using throw pillows and blankets. In my opinion, the more the better, but it all comes down to your preferences and budget.

2. Oversized Mirrors
Mirrors will make any room look way bigger than it actually is, and they look really elegant and chic. If you don’t have room to place an oversized mirror, using small mirrors as wall decor will also do the trick. When choosing a placement for your mirror, try to pick a wall that has direct natural light to maximise the effect.

3. Statement Walls
When deciding how to decorate a bedroom, how you style your walls is one of the most important things. I love bold accent walls, but they are not for everyone. Wallpaper, moulding panels or bold colours are an amazing way to add a lot of character to your bedroom. If you think you’ll get tired of it, choose the wall behind your bed, that way you won’t see it all the time.
Decorate your bedroom with these ideas:
4. Layer your bed up
This isn’t necessarily a styling tip, but you’ll love it. It’s what I like to call the “hotel feeling”. Mattress toppers and good quality linens will make you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud. It will be like being on holiday every day. Throw blankets will also help decorate your bedroom.

5. The importance of the Rug
When starting to plan how to decorate a bedroom, I always choose the rug first. It helps me plan what colour scheme I will be going for and how the complements and furniture will complement each other. A big rug will make the room feel bigger and cosier and will make the room look more expensive and elegant.
Decorate your bedroom with these ideas:
6. Lighting
Layering lighting is also really important when learning how to decorate a bedroom. General lighting – light that comes from the ceiling – is not enough to create a good ambience. Wall fixtures, bedside lamps and floor lamps are indispensable, this is called task lighting. When choosing lamps, make sure they are in proportion with the size of the room and with the rest of elements in it.
Decorate your bedroom with these ideas:
7. Choose the right curtains
You will never see a designer-decorated bedroom without great curtains. The size, how many there are and how they are hung is a lot more important than the pattern or the colour.
If you want your room to look expensive and well-decorated, hang the rod at least 6 inches above the window, and have it extend beyond the bracket (2-3 inches). Have the curtains “sweep” the floor so it looks you got them tailored and steam them so they always look perfect. For an even better look, use wide panels.

8. Avoid Clutter at all costs
You can have the most expensive and good-looking furniture in the world, but if your room is cluttered and messy it will never look good. From The Home Edit, I learned how important it is to organize your rooms in sections or stations. It will make your life a lot easier and will make your rooms look gorgeous. A really easy way to keep your pillows and blankets organised is using nice baskets like this one in the picture.

9. Decorate your walls
Wall decorations are the final touches that make a room look put together. Whether you want a big piece of art, tapestry or pictures, choosing a colour scheme and sticking to it will make your walls look amazing. It comes down to things like the size of the decorations you choose, how they complement the rest of the room and the materials you go for, to determine how well put together your bedroom looks.
Decorate your bedroom with these ideas:
10. Add life with some greenery
Plants – real or fake – are the best way to bring life to any room. They purify the air and help you feel and sleep better. They match with any style of decoration and are one of the key components on how to decorate your bedroom like an interior designer.
