This post is all about the best moving house tips that will save you hours.
I remember moving weekend always being SO stressful. Boxes would be everywhere, I’d never find anything, and I’d always lose tons of things along the way. After having done it so many times, however, I have come with some tips for moving that will make moving house A LOT easier for you.
Moving weekend should be all about getting to know your roomies, neighbors, and the area – and the takeaway possibilities – not about unpacking and figuring out in which box you put your underwear. Let me tell you my favorite moving house tips!
THE BEST MOVING HOUSE TIPS FOR COLLEGE
1. Start Packing ASAP
DO NOT start packing 2 days before moving day thinking it will be a breeze, it never is. You might think you don’t own a lot of stuff and it will be done in a couple of hours, but experience has taught me that you’ll be surprised with how much stuff you actually own.
As soon as you have an official move-out and move-in day, start packing a box a day for a couple of weeks, that means that you will still have plenty of time to enjoy your last couple of weeks before moving house, and you’ll get things done without it being overwhelming.
2. Make an inventory of what is in every box
Packing is easy enough, but when you arrive in your new house and it’s time to unpack, you’ll want to start with your essentials first. If you don’t know where they are, you’ll have to unpack every single box, and you have all the chances of not finding them until the very end.
One of the most useful tips for moving is to create an inventory of what’s in every box and stick it to the side. That way you know that your books can wait to be unpacked and you can focus your energy on your bedsheets and kitchen utensils. Another important moving house tip is to pick good quality boxes like these from Amazon to avoid making a mess if they break.
3. Organise your boxes per room, giving them color packing labels
If you want to make your life even easier when it’s time to unpack, organize your boxes per room, giving them color packing labels. This is one of the best tips for moving if you have people helping you. They won’t need to come to you every 5 minutes checking where things go, because the label and the inventory will tell them everything they need to know.
Doing this will save you lots of hours and effort, I promise you. I personally used this amazing tape from Amazon and it’s perfect because it’s 2-in-1!
4. Pack your essentials in a separate suitcase/box
The first time I moved I did not follow any of the advice I am giving you now, and after a very intense moving day – more than 12h – I found myself in a kitchen full of boxes, didn’t know where my utensils are and had to ask a restaurant down the street for plastic cutlery to eat my oven lasagne. It took me days to find any of my essentials, including underwear and work clothes.
If you definitely know you’re going to need certain things within the first couple of weeks after moving house, pack them in a separate box or even a suitcase so they don’t get lost in the sea of cardboard boxes your new place will be.
5. Make a little box with kitchen stuff to carry with you
Following the tip above, packing your kitchen utensils in a small box to carry with you will also be extremely helpful. Even if it’s just a pan, a pot, a pair of scissors, and some cutlery, this will save you time and money. How will it save you money? If you don’t have anything to cook with you’ll be ordering food all the time and your bank account will get mad at you.
A small transparent box like the one below should be perfect, and since it’s clear it won’t get mixed up with the rest of the kitchen boxes that can wait to be opened.
6. Take a picture of how electronics are connected
This is one of my absolute favorite moving house tips, and I promise it will save your life. I hate having to reconnect all the cables on electronic devices when I move apartments. I almost always screw up and have to call the company to send a technician to fix the router mess I made. I started taking pictures of how everything was connected and it’s been a massive success.
7. Use bin bags to transport your hanged clothes
People give me funny looks when I say I use bin bags to transport clothes when moving house. Having to take clothes off the hangers and hang them again in the new place is very time-consuming and shouldn’t be a thing. I put them in bin bags and tie the knot around the hangers and it saves me hours!
This is not the nicest of pictures but it’s literally how I do it and I promise you’ll love it! Definitely one of the best moving house tips ever!
8. Vacuum-seal out-of-season clothing
When I moved to England from Spain, packing everything I owned in two suitcases was extremely scary and I never thought I’d actually be able to do it. I found some tips for moving to another country online and this is one that saved my life. I did it with all my clothes but you can only do it with your out-of-season outfits that can go into storage straight away!
Vacuum-sealing is extremely easy, time-effective, and cheap. A literal life-saver when moving house. You can re-use the bags many times so it’s more environmentally-friendly than other transport and storage methods!
9. Change your address with enough time
This might sound very obvious and silly, but make a list of every single place you need to change your address at and do it with enough time! I’ve forgotten about subscriptions, magazines, and other minor stuff a lot of times and it’s very annoying when you have to drive all the way to pick something up, and it’s also very annoying for the new tenants! Make sure you plan this at least 3 weeks in advance and you should be good to go!
These were my favorite tips for moving house.
